Bend it like Beckham: I enjoy this movie, it's a multi-cultural, soccer/football, girl power movie. Jess is an Indian girl who lives with her family in England and loves soccer. Haveing a soccer star for a daughter isn't exactly what Jess' parents were hoping for and so she has to find a way to fulfil her dreams.

In The Good Old Summer Time: So if you recall when I talked about Shop Around the Corner and You've Got Mail, this movie was based on the same story, only it's a musical. This was a nice movie and very funny, but somehow it didn't have the magic that the other two, it was a good movie but not wonderful; the story didn't quite gel together completely, some movies everything just clicks and they live on, an other movies don't quite make it there. Buster Keaton was responsible for a lot of the humor in this movie, his part didn't actually work so well but his comedic direction was wonderful. Van Johnson and Judy Garland played the main roles and they were all right but neither are actors that I really love. Enjoyable but I'll stick with the other two movies in the future.

Coco Avant Chanel/Coco Before Chanel: This was a very interesting movie about the life of Gabriel Chanel before she became the fashion icon we know today. I enjoyed this movie and came away with a new respect for this woman; I had no idea how much she liberated women by her styles which did away with corsets etc. Oh, and this movie was in French.

Jodhaa Akbar: I loved this movie, I really, really loved it. This movie tells about the marriage between Emperor Akbar (I'm sorry I don't remember his other names or how to spell them, the same goes for his wife) and Princess Jodhaa... He was the head of the Moughal(sp?) Empire and she was a Princess of a kingdom that he gained command of in part through marriage to her. Their marriage was pretty ground breaking because he was Muslim and she was Hindu(i) and he allowed her to keep her religion and traditions, this lead to religious freedom and respect/tolerance in his empire. I know very little about these cultures and so it was very interesting to see more. I really loved the respect and wisdom between the two; I don't know how accurately it's portrayed but this movie is based on real people. See it today! P.S. the movie's in Hindi.

Blame it on Fidel!: This movie is French and takes place in the early 70s in Paris. Anna's family used to be upper middle class and Anna liked it that way, then Anna's dad quit his job and got involved with Chilean politics; Anna's mom got involved in women's lib and Anna's world got turned upside down. This movie was definitely thought provoking, it made me think about various ways of life, right and wrong, and the effects that parents choices can have on their children. I don't know if I'd watch it again but it was very interesting.

Raise the Red Lantern: This movie is Chinese but I don't know if the language is Cantonese or Mandarin. Songlian becomes the fourth wife of a rich man to please her step-mother after her father dies; she'd rather be at the University (I couldn't get a sense of how long ago this movie was set). As anyone who has spent a period of time with a group of women knows, the drama is inevitable and that's without them all competing for the attentions of the master. I found myself thinking how grateful I was not to be sharing Songlian's fate in any way.
