Blame it on Fidel!: This movie is French and takes place in the early 70s in Paris. Anna's family used to be upper middle class and Anna liked it that way, then Anna's dad quit his job and got involved with Chilean politics; Anna's mom got involved in women's lib and Anna's world got turned upside down. This movie was definitely thought provoking, it made me think about various ways of life, right and wrong, and the effects that parents choices can have on their children. I don't know if I'd watch it again but it was very interesting.
Raise the Red Lantern: This movie is Chinese but I don't know if the language is Cantonese or Mandarin. Songlian becomes the fourth wife of a rich man to please her step-mother after her father dies; she'd rather be at the University (I couldn't get a sense of how long ago this movie was set). As anyone who has spent a period of time with a group of women knows, the drama is inevitable and that's without them all competing for the attentions of the master. I found myself thinking how grateful I was not to be sharing Songlian's fate in any way.
